Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Do You Charge?
Unfortunately, it’s impossible to give a “standard fee” due to the complexity and unique nature of each criminal case. An initial retainer will be quoted when you first meet with Mr. Wansbutter, and once he’s reviewed the disclosure, a block fee will be provided so that you will be aware of all costs associated with your matter.
Do You Accept Legal Aid Clients?
Mr. Wansbutter believes that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, deserves the best defence possible on their criminal charges. He therefore takes on Legal Aid cases. To apply for Legal Aid, visit www.legalaid.on.ca.
Why Shouldn’t I Just Represent Myself?
Criminal Law in Canada has always been complex, but in recent years this has only increased. You know the facts of your case, but lawyers are trained in the intricacies of the law. Courtroom lawyers such as Mr. Wansbutter spend nearly every day of the week in court practicing our trade. You may not be aware of technical defences or how infringements of your rights could mean that certain evidence should be excluded.
The consequences of an unfavourable outcome in a criminal law case are extremely serious, including the loss of your freedom. While no lawyer can guarantee a favourable outcome, as a trained and experienced professional he can give you your best chances.
